1
Manuscript preparation
Getting your manuscript publication-ready
Milestone 1

Before you can publish, your manuscript needs to be clean, complete, and properly formatted. This milestone covers the final review steps that prevent costly corrections later.

  • Final proofread pass complete (grammar, spelling, punctuation)
  • Chapter structure confirmed and consistent
  • Front matter written: title page, copyright, dedication, table of contents
  • Back matter written: author bio, acknowledgements, call to action
  • Manuscript saved as clean .docx file
Output: Publication-ready manuscript file, fully assembled with front and back matter.
2
ISBNs and copyright registration
Establishing your book's legal and commercial identity
Milestone 2

An ISBN is not optional for wide distribution. This milestone ensures your book has a proper commercial identity before any files go to a printer or distributor.

  • ISBNs purchased at Bowker (MyIdentifiers.com): one for print, one for ebook
  • ISBN assigned to your publishing imprint name (not your personal name)
  • Copyright page updated with correct ISBN and year
  • Optional: copyright registered at copyright.gov for additional legal protection
Output: Two ISBNs registered in your imprint name, copyright page finalized.
3
Cover design
Your most important marketing asset
Milestone 3

Your cover is not decoration. It is your primary conversion tool in every online marketplace. A professional cover pays for itself immediately. This milestone ensures your cover is designed to specification before you have a print file to wrap it around.

  • Genre and competitive covers researched for positioning
  • Designer briefed or Canva/Reedsy template selected
  • Front cover approved: title, subtitle, author name, visual
  • Spine and back cover copy written (100 to 150 word description)
  • Barcode placeholder included on back cover for IngramSpark
  • Cover saved as print-ready PDF (300 DPI minimum)
Output: Print-ready cover PDF and separate ebook front cover JPG at 2500px minimum height.
4
Interior formatting
Preparing print and ebook interior files
Milestone 4

Interior formatting is the step most authors underestimate. An unformatted manuscript submitted to IngramSpark will be rejected or look amateurish. This milestone produces two separate formatted files: one for print, one for digital.

  • Print trim size selected (most common: 6 x 9 inch)
  • Interior formatted using Reedsy, Atticus, or professional formatter
  • Page numbers, headers, chapter openers confirmed
  • Print-ready interior PDF exported
  • Ebook EPUB file exported or created separately
  • Both files reviewed using IngramSpark file review tool
Output: Approved print interior PDF and EPUB file, both passing IngramSpark file specifications.
5
IngramSpark account setup
Your publishing infrastructure
Milestone 5

IngramSpark is the distribution backbone that puts your book in bookstores, libraries, and online retailers worldwide. This milestone gets your account ready before you upload any files, avoiding the most common setup mistakes.

  • IngramSpark account created at ingramspark.com
  • Publisher compensation (payment) information entered
  • Tax information completed
  • Publisher imprint name confirmed (must match ISBN registration)
  • Distribution settings reviewed: US, UK, EU, Australia at minimum
  • Returnability setting decision made (returnable recommended for bookstore access)
Output: Fully configured IngramSpark publisher account, ready to receive your first title.
6
Title setup and file upload
Submitting your book to IngramSpark
Milestone 6

This is the milestone where your book officially becomes a title in the global publishing system. Every detail entered here propagates to Amazon, Barnes and Noble, libraries, and thousands of other retail points worldwide.

  • Title, subtitle, and author name entered exactly as they appear on cover
  • Book description written (150 to 250 words, sales-focused)
  • BISAC subject categories selected (primary and secondary)
  • Keywords added (7 search phrases your readers would use)
  • Pricing set for print and ebook editions
  • Print interior PDF and cover PDF uploaded and approved
  • EPUB uploaded and approved
  • Print proof ordered before approving for sale
Output: Title live in IngramSpark system, print proof ordered for final review.
7
Proof review and approval
The final check before your book goes live
Milestone 7

The physical proof is not optional. Errors that are invisible on screen become obvious in print. This milestone protects you from publishing a book with problems you cannot fix without reprinting.

  • Physical proof copy received and reviewed cover to cover
  • Cover color, spine width, and back cover checked against expectations
  • Interior margins, headers, and page numbers verified
  • All chapter titles and section breaks confirmed correct
  • Any corrections uploaded and second proof ordered if changes significant
  • Final approval submitted in IngramSpark dashboard
Output: Book approved for sale in IngramSpark, live in the global distribution network.
8
Amazon author central and KDP setup
Claiming your presence on the world's largest bookseller
Milestone 8

IngramSpark distributes to Amazon, but Amazon Author Central gives you direct control over your author profile, editorial reviews, and book page content. This milestone ensures your Amazon presence is professional and complete.

  • Amazon Author Central account created at authorcentral.amazon.com
  • Author bio written and uploaded (100 to 200 words)
  • Author photo uploaded
  • Book claimed and linked to Author Central profile
  • Editorial description reviewed and updated if needed
  • Author page URL customized if available
Output: Professional Amazon author page live and linked to your published title.
9
Launch preparation
Building momentum before your publication date
Milestone 9

A quiet launch is a missed opportunity. This milestone ensures you have a simple, executable launch plan that generates initial sales, reviews, and visibility without requiring a large audience or paid advertising budget.

  • Launch date set (minimum 3 weeks after proof approval)
  • Launch team recruited: 10 to 20 people who will read and review
  • Advance reader copies sent to launch team
  • Social announcement posts drafted for launch week
  • Email announcement written for your list
  • Podcast, media, or speaking pitches drafted with book as credential
  • Amazon review strategy confirmed with launch team
Output: Launch week plan documented, advance readers briefed, announcement content ready to post.
